Las Patronas Introduces Five New Members, Announces the Grand Total Raised at the 61st Jewel Ball, and Unveils the Theme for the 2008 Jewel Ball

For Immediate Release:

La Jolla, CA, October 17, 2007 – At its annual celebration of success, Las Patronas members gathered at a luncheon at the La Jolla Country Club to introduce new active members, announce the record-breaking fundraising total of the 2007 Jewel Ball, and unveil the theme or Jewel Ball 2008.

The event began with the introduction of Michelle Ganon, Liz Gotfredson, Megan Heine, Elaine Murphy, and Marlena Poulin, who were welcomed into the ranks of dedicated volunteers who keep the organization’s 62 -year-old tradition of service alive throughout San Diego.

Kathryn Stephens, Chair of Jewel Ball 2007, announced the amount raised by ARTRAGEOUS! in her typically artistic fashion, by having the chairs of her committee hold individually painted canvases, each displaying one digit of the total $ 1,151,443.  “Who says art doesn’t pay?” laughed Stephens, pointing to the canvases.  “We are so lucky to have so many friends supporting Las Patronas.  From the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club to the donors, advertisers, and underwriters to the guests who attend the Ball, each and every one has played a significant part in our success.  I applaud them and all our membership for making dreams come true across San Diego County.”

“The record amount of money raised by our 61st Ball will enable us to extend our reach into the community and to help even more nonprofits achieve their missions throughout San Diego,” said Las Patronas President Barbara Mulligan.  “It would not be possible to do the work we do without the incredible support of our community partners.  We are so grateful to our generous underwriters, donors, advertisers and to our partner, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, who has hosted the Ball for the last 61 years.”

In addition to fulfilling the grant requests of Las Patronas’ 2007 major beneficiaries, proceeds of Jewel Ball 2007 will be disbursed in two grant cycles this year to a significant number of deserving nonprofit organizations throughout San Diego.

The culmination of the afternoon’s proceedings was the announcement of the theme of Jewel Ball 2008.  New Jewel Ball Chair Caroline Nierenberg, along with her co-chairs, Jennifer Greenfield and Tracy Lyon, finally broke their silence and revealed the secret:  SPEAKEASY.  “We’re planning fun on a historic level,” said Nierenberg, “all in the name of raising money for our beneficiaries.  What could be better than that?”

Jewel Ball 2008, SPEAKEASY, will be held on Saturday, August 2 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
